A swift response from Selby Police resulted in the arrest of two men on suspicion of burglary and handling stolen goods.

Officers were alerted at around 12.25am on Monday 24 May when the alarm at WH Smith in Gowthorpe was activated. CCTV operators spotted a man outside the store who made off on a bike.

As officers conducted their investigations property from the shop was found scattered across the car park at the nearby Sainsbury's on Abbey Walk. They also discovered that the Arc charity shop had been broken into.

Detectives from Selby CID attended the scene and found a charity box and items from the shop discarded in nearby rubbish bins.

Police reviewed the CCTV footage which allowed them to identify one of the offenders, a 24-year-old local man who was located at a nearby address a short time later. He was arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.

A 37-year-old man was also arrested at the property and is currently in police custody.
